Picked Nozawana
It’s getting cold these days in Matsumoto and we can see snow covering on the top of Japan Northern Alps.
If you visit Japan during this winter, it is a great chance for you to experience snow skiing at Nagano. Winter is also a season of picked vegetable. Japanese always have meal with this simple but nutritious dish.
Nozawana, a kind of mustard vegetable which grow widely in Japan. Picked Nozawana is one of the most typical local foods in Nagano prefecture.
This is a very simple dish which is made of nozawana and salt. Shoyu (a typical Japanese soy sauce) and miso (a Japanese seasoning often produced by fermenting soybean) are sometimes added in to make picked nozawana. Japanese call this dish nozawana zuke. You can see nozawana zuke in onigiri or oyaki (a Japanese dumpling made from a fermented buckwheat).
If you have a trip to Matsumoto this winter, don’t forget to try Oyaki a traditional dish of Nagano.
